WHAT IS BUSINESS ETHICS? ISN'T THAT AN OXYMORON?
The Alliance finds most businesses are comprised of good, decent people who care about their company and their communities. But while most people have good intentions, sometimes good people can do unethical things. This can be for a number of reasons including blindspots, pressure from leadership, or the right systems and processes not being in place.
Business Ethics is the application of moral standards, tools, and frameworks to an organization in the hopes of achieving the business’s purpose through practices that are morally good and morally right.
WHAT IS THE POINT OF BUSINESS ETHICS?
Having ethics in business helps you meet a need in the marketplace in a way that you can be proud of, is legal, and enhances your reputation so you can earn more profits, gain new/repeat customers, attract/retain employees who want to work for you, draw vendors that want to do business with you, and have a positive impact on your community-at-large.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE ETHICS?
As the English judge and barrister Lord John Moulton wrote in Law and Manners “…[ethics] is obedience to the unenforceable.” It is not about compliance to the law; it is about following our values. Ethical organizations have strong ethical cultures. Their leaders and employees strive to do what is morally good and morally right in the workplace. They think about how to treat each other. They think long-term about the serious harm or help they can do to other people. They think about being part of something bigger than themselves.
